Sound Baffles (MFA thesis exhibition)

With sufficient strength, sound waves at 11.5 Hz is said to cause disorientation. This installation involved creating a maze of welded steel and reflective builders insulation with a dark atmosphere. When viewers entered the maze armed only with a blacklight, small bits of "graffiti" proclaimed various sentiments and quips relating to the subject matter. Once through the maze, a central room housed ten large backlit Duratrans photographs of digital images that are lit only when proximity motion detectors are tripped by the viewer coming close enough. In this space a synthesizer propagated the sub-audible wavelength to produce the disorienting effect. The imagery for the digital photos was produced using accounts acquired from alleged alien abductees. Their descriptions were made into 3D computer models and rendered to large digital files before being transfered to film.
